The Target
What Is a Helice Target?
Helice is French and Spanish for "propeller," and that's exactly what this unique shotgun target resembles. Two orange plastic wings spin around a white center cap, known as the "witness," which is roughly the size of a standard clay and is the only part that counts for a hit. The witness must be knocked completely free to score.
Before launch, the target is spun at roughly 5,000 RPM. Once released, the wings catch the air and create an unpredictable flight path that can climb, flutter, and dive with the slightest change in wind. No two flights are ever quite the same, making Helice one of the most challenging and exciting target sports around.
America has very few of these.
Helice arrived in the United States around 1980, but it never spread the way sporting clays did. The reason comes down to what it takes to build a ring.
A sporting clays course goes anywhere
Basic equipment, moved around and varied at will. Want a new presentation? Just move the machine. That flexibility is why sporting clays spread across the country so quickly.
A helice ring does not
It's a permanent installation, five traps in fixed positions, a fenced ring, and a computer release system. Once it's built, it stays built, and that cost is why rings are so rare.

Helice rings are rare on this side of the Atlantic. There is one twenty minutes south of San Jose.
