Long Gun Transfers
As a Federal Firearms Licensed dealer, Coyote Valley can handle your long gun transfer, whether you bought it online, from another dealer, or from a private party. Here are the guidelines we follow, the fees in full, and what your shipper needs to do.
We're sorry, but we do not transfer handguns of any kind. If your firearm is a handgun, we can't help, and it will be refused if shipped here.
Three Routes In
Where did the gun come from?
That's the question that determines everything: the fee, the paperwork, and what happens next. Find yours below.
Private Party Transfer
Buying from, or selling to, another individual. Both the buyer and the seller must appear in person together, at the same time. The firearm stays with us for the ten-day waiting period.
Purchased at Coyote Valley
Bought from our Pro Shop. There's no dealer fee, just the state DROS fee and tax on the firearm. Shipments to other FFLs are possible by special arrangement, if you reside out of state.
Purchased From Another Dealer
Bought online or from another FFL. The gun must be shipped by an FFL dealer, anything sent by a private individual will be refused. Email us before anything ships.

Long Gun Transfer From Another FFL
We must also collect California sales or use tax and California excise tax (CFET) on the value of the gun, based on the receipt provided by the seller or shipper, unless you have a receipt showing the tax is already paid, or the seller has a business presence in California. That tax is calculated on the value of the gun plus any shipping and handling. We'll need this as a separate payment.

Read these before you click "buy" on a gun somewhere else. Accepting them is how a transfer starts, and two of them can cost you real money if they're missed.
It Must Be a Long Gun
No handguns, of any kind, in any circumstance. If you're unsure whether your firearm counts as a long gun, ask us before you buy it, not after it arrives.
It Must Ship From an FFL Dealer
Guns shipped from non-FFL holders, such as private individuals, will be refused. If you're buying from a private seller, you want the Private Party Transfer route instead, where you both come in together.
The Transfer Cost Is $187.35
DROS fee of $37.19 including tax, our dealer fee of $125.00, plus $11.41 sales tax and $13.75 excise tax on that dealer fee. Itemized in full above.
We Must Collect Tax on the Gun
California sales or use tax and excise tax on the value of the firearm plus shipping and handling, based on the seller's receipt, unless the tax is already paid or the seller has a California business presence. This is a separate payment from the transfer fee.
Non-Legal Guns Go Back at Your Expense
Any gun received that is not California legal will be shipped back at the buyer's expense. And if a transfer can't be completed, because of a DROS issue or a problem with the gun, the full cost of returning it, plus all associated costs including storage, is charged to the buyer. This is the expensive mistake. Check California legality before you buy.
For Your Shipper
Send this part to the seller.
These three rules are for whoever is putting the gun in the box. Two of them will get your shipment refused at the gate if they're missed, so forward this section to your seller rather than assuming they know.

Do not ship without notifying us in advance at info@coyoteclays.com. We'll reply and send our FFL to the shipper to facilitate the shipment.

The shipper must obtain a CFLC approval letter from the California DOJ before shipment. One quick registration, then approval numbers are available 24/7 online or by phone.

The DOJ Verification Approval Number must be written on the outside of the shipping box, or the gun will be refused. Not inside. On the outside.
Never USPS. They will not deliver to our location and the shipment will be refused.

How to Start
Four steps, and one email.
Every transfer begins the same way: with an email, before anything moves.
Email Us
Send your details, the firearm's details, and your shipper or seller's name, contact information and email address.
Shipment
We reply and send our license to your shipper, who ships via FedEx or UPS with the DOJ number on the outside of the box.
DROS
The gun arrives, we check it and let you know. Bring a valid California Driver's License or DMV ID and start your DROS. You'll also need to bring a valid hunting license, Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC), or a qualifying exemption.
Pickup
The ten-day waiting period runs with the firearm held by us. Collect it on the eleventh day. A $35 per-firearm fee applies to Private Party Transfers only if they aren't picked up then; we don't charge a storage fee on incoming dealer transfers or Pro Shop purchases.

The questions we field most often about transfers. If yours isn't here, call the front desk, we'd rather answer it now than after your gun is in a box.
For a private party transfer, yes, those are by appointment only, and both the buyer and the seller must appear in person together at the same time. For a transfer shipped from another dealer, no appointment is needed, but you must email us before anything ships. Give us a call if you'd like to confirm a time.
A valid California Driver's License or a California DMV ID. That's the requirement for every transfer we process, including firearms purchased from our own Pro Shop. If your ID is not a REAL ID, you'll also need to provide a copy of your birth certificate or a valid passport. You'll also need a valid hunting license, Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC), or a qualifying exemption.
No, the purchaser named on the DROS completes the paperwork and takes delivery in person. If you have an unusual circumstance, call us before you buy rather than after the firearm arrives.
If a transfer can't be completed because of a DROS issue or a problem with the gun, the full cost of returning the firearm, plus all associated costs including storage, is charged to the buyer. The same applies to any firearm received that turns out not to be California legal. This is why we ask you to check legality before you buy.
Our fees are charged per firearm: the dealer fee, the DROS fee and any storage fee all apply to each gun. California also places limits on how frequently firearms may be acquired, so please contact us before purchasing multiple firearms and we'll tell you how it applies to your situation.
Your firearm stays with us throughout the ten-day waiting period, that part is required. It's ready for collection on the eleventh day following DROS processing. A $35 storage fee per firearm applies to Private Party Transfers only if it isn't picked up then; we don't charge a storage fee on incoming dealer transfers or Pro Shop purchases. If you know you'll be away, tell us in advance.
For a dealer transfer, $187.35 covers the DROS fee, our dealer fee, and the tax on that fee. Separately, we must collect California sales or use tax and excise tax on the value of the firearm itself, based on your seller's receipt, unless that tax is already paid or the seller has a California business presence. Please contact us to confirm accepted payment methods before you come in.
We're a shotgun and long gun facility, and our transfer service reflects that. We don't transfer handguns of any kind, in any circumstance. A handgun shipped here will be refused, and returning it will be at your expense. If you're unsure whether your firearm counts as a long gun, ask us before you buy it.
